Winner of the September, 2003 "Photo of the Month"contest on www.northern-lights.no

Heavenly Hands

This photograph was taken August 5, 2003 on the Juneau Icefield, north of Juneau, Alaska. The evening was cool and clear
at an elevation of 5,600', and I had a hunch that the lights would appear later that night. However, I wasn't expecting this bright
display shortly after sunset. I had about 5 minutes to grab my camera and get set up before this band exploded across the
northwestern sky. To me, it looks like a pair of hands reaching down from the sky.  The beautiful gradation of the sky from white
to blue to black is due to the remnant light from the setting sun, which also provided a pleasing silhouette of the mountains.
